Why Double Cleansing Isn’t Just a Trend and When You Actually Need It

Healthy skin begins with a clean foundation, but cleansing isn’t one-size-fits-all. While double cleansing has become a popular skincare ritual, it isn’t necessary for everyone or every day. As a dermatologist, I encourage patients to cleanse intentionally — in a way that supports, not disrupts, the skin barrier.

What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing uses two steps to thoroughly remove buildup from the skin. The first step relies on an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and sebum. The second step uses a water-based cleanser to wash away remaining impurities, debris, and sweat.

This method works well for those who wear foundation, water-resistant sunscreen, or live in areas with higher pollution. However, it’s important to know when your skin actually needs it.

When to Double Cleanse

I don’t double cleanse daily. I only do it when I’ve worn makeup or a heavy layer of sunscreen. On those days, I start with jojoba oil, micellar water, or Vaseline to remove buildup. Then I follow with the Fresh Face Cleanser — a pH-balanced, dermatologist-formulated cleanser enriched with aloe, oat-derived surfactants, and a postbiotic ferment to gently cleanse while nourishing the skin microbiome.

This two-step approach leaves skin fresh, hydrated, and balanced without over-stripping.

When a Single Cleanse Is Enough

If you haven’t worn makeup or sunscreen, one cleanse with the Fresh Face Cleanser is enough. Over-cleansing can weaken your barrier, causing dryness, sensitivity, and even breakouts.

Your cleanser should leave your skin feeling comfortable, soft, and clean  not tight or dry. That’s a sign your skin barrier remains intact.

Why the Fresh Face Cleanser Works

The Fresh Face Cleanser was developed to deliver a deep clean while supporting skin health. Its oat-derived surfactants provide a gentle yet effective cleansing action, while aloe vera soothes and hydrates. The inclusion of a postbiotic ferment helps nourish and rebalance the skin’s microbiome, promoting resilience and barrier strength.

Key benefits include:

- pH-balanced and dermatologist-formulated
- Enriched with aloe to calm and hydrate
Powered by oat-derived surfactants for gentle cleansing
- Includes postbiotic ferment to nourish the skin microbiome
- Clinically tested and suitable for all skin tones and types
- Ideal for daily use or as the second step in a double-cleansing routine

Patients frequently share how refreshed, soft, and smooth their skin feels after using it. One described it best: “It’s so gentle and calming, it makes me happy to wash my face twice a day.”

Double cleansing can enhance your routine when needed — but it’s not essential every day. The key is consistency and balance. Use a cleanser that respects your barrier, supports hydration, and aligns with your skin’s natural rhythm.
